Artist Spotlight: Linda McFarlin

Living History Series

Through her illustrations and portraits, Linda McFarlin takes us back to a historical time period from 1700 – 1870. With the help of reenactors, historical diaries, and research, Linda has concentrated on a large body of works to give you true portraits and scenes of our American heritage.

Linda is a realistic artist, who focuses on the principles of perspective and value. Through keen observation of the subject, she renders the realness of the subject and the texture and light that surround them. In each portrait, Linda has created the character and emotion that were visible in the faces of Native American people, Mountain men, Longhunters, militia, and skilled crafters of the period.

Artist Statement: Most of these works I consider to be portraits, in which I have attempted to capture the essence of the American culture. This is designed to take viewers back to the days when Ohio was still wild, rough, and dangerous terrain. It is meant to teach, edify, and entertain through authenticity and accuracy. I believe the ability of art to attract the eye has to do with a combination of visual elements. In this collection I believe the weaving of color, value, shapes, highlights, and texture compel the viewer to look at the work over and over again, making new discoveries along the path outlined by the artist. Working on this historical series has renewed my journey as an artist... It is a compliment when someone tells me my work looks so realistic they can see the colors and feel the sunlight on the subjects… that is the ultimate for me.
