ARCHANGEL GABRIEL

The prototype for this icon is from the thirteenth century. Unlike most other depictions of the Archangel Gabriel, the angel does not hold a sword but rather a staff, in his left hand. The gesture of his right hand has three meanings- First it is the gesture for silence; the second is the call to prayer; and the third is the promise of God’s grace upon humanity.
